1181 Restaurant
When dining at Chartham Hatch’s 1181 Restaurant, here at the beautiful Howfield Manor Hotel, it’s suddenly very easy to see how Kent earned its title of ‘The Garden of England’. Situated mere moments from Canterbury and within easy reach of the famous East Kent coastline, the 1181 Restaurant is found among blooming gardens, patches of vegetables scattered throughout the gardens of this pretty manor house originally established in, of course, 1181. Wherever possible, the chefs of the 1181 kitchens source their ingredients within a twenty mile radius - fish from the nearby ports and vegetables even homegrown on site. This wonderful produce results in spectacularly simple, flavourful classic French and British dishes that promise to delight and inspire.

Azouma
A fusion of Moroccan, Lebanese and Mediterranean aromas, this popular and cosy restaurant on Church Street in Canterbury is a hit with local food-lovers. The dark and exotic souk-style dining room at Azouma – decorated with lanterns, low tables and mountains of cushions – is a fun place for dinner parties and romantic meals, and every Thursday night the restaurant hosts live belly dancers. Couscous dishes, spicy chargrills, home-baked bread and pastries are all served here – and signature dishes from the kitchen include the tagine djej bzetoun – a slow-cooked dish with chicken, piquant lemons and olives; and the samakeh harrah – sea bass baked in a traditional Lebanese fashion.

Michael Caines at ABode
toptable Dining Awards 2010 - Runner-up: Best for Parties. The Michael Caines at ABode restaurant in the historic city of Canterbury is a sure choice for fine dining with a relaxed atmosphere. Airy and stylish, the restaurant is sophisticated and timeless in its décor. But the real star of the ABode show is the menu. It of course bears the Michael Caines name, giving plenty of Michelin star credit, but it’s Executive Chef, Jean-Marc Zanetti and Head Chef Toby Lin, who are the real names behind the delicious combination of seasonal ingredients and creative processes. With a temperature controlled wine room, a spectacular seven course tasting menu and the chef’s table set inside the kitchen, ABode offers a thrilling dining experience.

Olive Grove
This rustic trattoria in Canterbury is the result of a delightful tale of serendipity... The Olive Grove came to fruition when two Italian travellers who were childhood friends became stranded after their car broke down just outside the city, and after falling in love with the place the friends decided to stay put and together created this authentic Italian eatery that has become a hit on the local dining scene. Filled with wooden furniture, terra cotta coloured walls and potted plants, the Olive Grove has a unique, down-to-earth atmosphere, and star dishes include the Fiorentina pizza and the scalloppine al limone – veal in a lemon butter and white wine sauce served with roast potatoes.

Osteria Posillipo Pizzeria
Childhood friends Enzo Espedito welcome you to a little taste of Napoli with Osteria Posillipo Pizzaria – quite likely one of Canterbury’s friendliest restaurants. Decorated in relaxing woods, this light, airy space has the added bonus of being located near the Marlowe Theatre. An in-house wood-fired stone oven is visible from the open-plan kitchen on the ground floor, allowing hungry diners watch their pizzas bubble away the traditional way. Not in the mood for pizza? Traditional Italian favourites are the name of the game here, including fresh, homemade pasta like spaghetti a vongole.

The Red Lion Inn
Located in the village of Bridge, just outside Canterbury, The Red Lion is a traditional British pub with a splash of French restaurant flair. Eye-catching from the outside, The Red Lion boasts a uniquely old fashioned exterior brought up-to-date with a lick of light coloured paint, while inside is comfortable and cosy, a traditional space with olde worlde charm in its rough beams and pillars – the ideal village pub. But while the décor might be traditional, The Red Lion’s menu is less so. With the influence of host Rene Renault (from Rennes no less), the kitchen has added French sophistication to locally sourced ingredients - including eggs from the owners’ own hens – in modern creative dishes.
